Maritime Institute's Philosophy

The school has taken an holistic approach to provide a balanced education for estheticians.

To achieve this, our team of highly trained and skilled individuals promote the perfecting of outer beauty and the discovery and nurturing of inner beauty. We recognize that true beauty radiates from within and self-confidence grows from the belief that one is well-presented and well grounded.

Director's Biography

Maureen Naddaf Serroul is the founder and director of the Maritime Institute of Holistic Esthetics located in North Sydney. Her background includes studies in cosmetology and new age esthetics, business and communication.

Maureen began her career after graduating from Ecole de Marie Hue, an institute in Montreal that specializes in cosmetology and esthetics.

After graduating in 1964, Maureen returned to Cape Breton where she helped with the education of many apprenticeship students. In 1968 she opened her own salon where she continued to help apprenticeship students and assisted in work experience programs. She is a past member of the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Board.

In 1988, after traveling abroad and observing many new and innovative ideas and practices, she began to encourage the esthetics industry to move in new directions.

She served as a director on the Cosmetology board from 1995 - 1998, where much of her time was spent upgrading standards in the industry. Her driving force however, was to promote and educate the potential future growth of the esthetics industry.

As a pioneer in promoting a Holistic Approach to Esthetics, Maureen's ambition is to prepare students for future employment in Health Spas and Wellness Centers. Her development of a unique approach to teaching esthetics utilizing a three-tiered process - Scientific, Technical, and Practical/Hands-On - has earned her national and international recognition.

 Maureen Naddaf Serroul
In 1996 she opened the Maritime Institute of Holistic Esthetics. With the esthetics industry moving towards health and wellness, she has focused on introducing new age studies to the field of esthetics and was instrumental at encouraging major resorts to open spa services.

In a culmination of her efforts, her institute has recently been invited to become a resource member of the Examining Board of Natural Medicine Practitioners, giving her graduates a leading edge in Holistic (Alternative) Skin Care. As well, Maureen has recently been listed in the National Register's "Who's Who in Executives and Professionals" and is registered at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.

Her vision and focus on apprenticeship training is that programs must be well balanced. She believes it is essential that programs in Nova Scotia receive inter-provincial licensing if the province and students are to remain competitive in the global market.

With all of the accolades and praise Maureen and her Institute have received, her proudest moment continues to be at the school's yearly graduation. It is then she sends forth another group of what she knows are exemplary examples of the future of the industry she is so passionate about promoting.
